French 19th Century Carnelian Intaglio Signet

A superb, rare French late-Victorian era signet ring made in Nancy. Intricate engraving of the Roman God Mars on a thick carnelian plaque. Based on the neo-attic helmet of this warrior, this intaglio is likely to depicts the ancient Roman ‘God of War’, Mars (Ares in ancient Greek mythology). The intaglio is set in a typically French 19th century mount, constructed with six parallel gold bands all the way around.
