French 19th Century Amethyst Cameo Ring

This charming antique cameo ring was made in France in the second half of the 19th century. An amethyst is finely carved creating a relief effect where the bust rises from the ground. It depicts a classical figure of antiquity, possibly an emperor or philosopher. The intaglio may be a century or two older than the ring. The openwork band is crafted in 18K gold and features a twisting scrolled motif at the shoulder which terminates in a grooved shank.
