The Story

Antique Citrine Coat of Arms Intaglio Signet Ring

This superb signet ring dates to the late 19th century circa 1890 and was likely made in Germany. A bezel set citrine is beautifully engraved with a heraldic coat of arms.

The coat of arms of this intaglio originates from Germany or Scandinavia as these are the two countries which use bull’s horns in their heraldry. The shield composition of the coat of arms suggests it belonged to landed gentry whereas the helmet type contradicts this and suggests the owner came from a less noble background. This juxtaposition was common in the 19th century when much heraldic law had been abolished. The arms display various charges within the quarters, one with a rose, another with a spear-sword-horn combination, one with stars and a final charge displaying unusually runic symbols.

UK size Q 1/2, US size 8 1/4, 10.26g gold (heavy!), 18K gold

The ring is in great overall condition, the stone has some loss on one side but not too noticeable.
