The Story

This stunning antique cluster ring was made in France and dates to the late 19th century. In the centre rests a natural carbuncle garnet in an open back grain setting, with an approximate weight of 2.7 carats, encircled and flanked by 18 rose cut diamonds in cutdown silver settings. The ring also has a decorative pierced gallery in the form of crescents and a solid semi-circular shank.

The garnet is a particularly ‘juicy’ specimen and absorbs light beautifully. The carbuncle garnet has a long and interesting history, in was mentioned in The Bible and is said to protect the wearer by the power of the flame! The diamonds are rose cut and the triangular facets of these cuts were very popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut.

UK size M 1/4, approx. US size 6, 3.86g, bezel measures 15mm x 12mm. The ring is in excellent condition considering it’s age, the stones are set securely but the prongs could be tightened by a local jeweller if desired as there is a faint rattling sound when shaken.

French eagle head control mark to indicate 18K/750 gold made in Paris.
