The Story
This unusual gold ring is set with an oval agate intaglio which dates to the late 18th century. The intaglio is engraved to depict Cupid, possibly at the forge of the Vulcan. Above the image is the text ‘ALUME LA FEU’ which is French and translates to ‘Light the Fire’. The Vulcan is the god of fire and the blacksmith of the gods. He is often pictured accompanied by his wife Venus and her son Cupid, whose wings he forged.
The intaglio is set in a later mount which dates to around the mid-20th century. The stone is prong set and the conical cannetille work filagree mount protrudes 10mm from the finger. The striking design catches the eye and draws attention to the intaglio.
