The Story
A superb antique 19th century gold opal and diamond bracelet, circa 1880.
This large and magnificent bracelet was made in either France or England and it weighs an impressive 27 grams of 21K gold. Despite its significant age, it has survived in excellent condition. The bracelet boasts a particularly shiny and untarnished surface due to its particularly high gold fineness which tarnishes at a much slower rate.Â
The quatrefoil cluster-shaped head is set with an opal cabochon, surrounded by an old mine cut diamond in each of the cardinal directions. The entire exterior of the bracelet is intricately engraved with scrollwork and foliate motifs.
The diamonds have a fantastic bright white colour with excellent clarity and large open culets, allowing them to sparkle marvellously. The gemstones are all tightly set and the clasp functions securely. Both the diamonds and opal are in open-backed settings which enables easy cleaning!
The bracelet measures 16.5cm in length. Each diamond weighs approximately 0.3ct. (1.2 ctw). The opal cabochon weighs 1ct. The quatrefoil head measures 3cm by 2cm and protrudes outwards 1cm.
The bracelet design is particularly scarce and it is an exquisite and very wearable example of Victorian craftsmanship! A truly stunning jewel from a bygone era which has survived in excellent condition despite all oddsâŠ
