The Story

A superb antique Georgian diamond cluster ring, circa 1780-1820.

The silver-topped gold bezel exhibits a floral cluster of rose cut diamonds, all in closed-back rubover silver settings. The diamonds are foil-backed to enhance their lustre by reflecting light back out through the stone, and the triangular facets of the rose cuts allow them to glisten more beautifully in candlelight.

The bezel is attached to openwork split shoulders leading to a grooved quasi-double band. The gorgeous ring sits flat on the finger to allow for frequent wear, and reminds me of a four armed/legged starfish!

UK ring size J, US size 4.75

The ring weighs 2 grams, the bezel measures 12mm x 10mm. The central diamond measures 4mm across, with the surrounding rose cuts 3mm x 2mm (approx. 0.4ctw).

The band tests as 18K gold and stamped with an old hallmark (probably Dutch).

The ring remains in very good overall condition despite being over 200 years old, wear consistent with age and use - the silver has tarnished to a dark grey, which can easily be polished back to bright silver if desired. The foiling underneath the diamonds has began to darken and upon loupe magnification a hairline fracture is visible to the central rose cut which does not extend pass the surface. A rare survivor and a very unusual example - a truly coveted find!
