Antique Rose Cut Diamond Earrings—
$2,010.10
The Story
A charming pair of late 19th century dormeuse earrings, crafted in Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, circa 1890.Â
Each earring is set with two foil-backed rose cut diamonds, mounted in finely toothed collet settings. The diamonds measure approximately 4mm in diameter, offering a soft shimmer that’s beautifully complemented by the surrounding starburst-like silver bezels. The upper and lower sections are joined seamlessly, forming a delicate double-drop design.
The backs and gallery are crafted in solid 14K yellow gold, while the front-facing diamond mounts are topped in silver. The pierced openwork galleries are decorated with small crescent motifs.
The earrings feature sprung lever-back closures, known as dormeuse settings—from the French word for "sleeper"—so called because they were designed to be comfortable enough to sleep in. This practical and secure fastening style became popular in Vienna and Paris in the late 19th century.
Hallmarks: Stamped with the Austrian 14K gold mark and the Vienna control mark used between 1872 and 1922.
Dimensions: Each earring measures 15mm x 10mm.
Stone Diameter: Approx. 4mm per diamond; setting diameter approx. 7mm.
Weight: 3 grams total.
Condition: Very good antique condition with secure fastenings and gentle age-related patina.
A delicate and wearable pair of late Victorian earrings—perfect for both special occasions and everyday.
