This exceptional ring combines the artistry of two distinct eras: an ancient Roman nicolo intaglio, dating to the 1st to 2nd century AD, set within an elegant late 18th-century gold signet mount. Nicolo intaglios are a refined type of glyptic art, crafted from sardonyx, agate, chalcedony, or glass, where a lighter surface layer is skillfully carved away to reveal a darker ground. In this example, the intaglio is made from glass, featuring a mottled light blue layer over a deep blue background. It likely depicts Hercules, the Roman God of strength and heroism, a subject revered in antiquity as a symbol of power, courage, and virtue.
